The baby had a fever all night, so I am in a hurry to get back to my family. Here is a brief news round up of the most recent mothering health issues without analysis or even snarky commentary. If I have taught you well, you’ll be able to help replenish my supply of humour with a comment on any of the following:
The Guardian reports on a study that found the poorly named phenomenon of “morning sickness” is not caused by pregnancy hormones. Instead, researchers now believe it’s a protection mechanism designed to protect against food poisoning, toxins and other invisible, insidious microbes in our food.
The Scotsman outlines research that concluded that children whose mother’s smoked during pregnancy start showing a tendency toward behavioural problems at 18 months of age.
Remember the study that found working mothers tend to be healthier and slimmer than women who stay at home? A new study reported in the Globe and Mail says that those findings aren’t true if mothers work overtime. Apparently, the additional stress of long hours makes women who also take care of families, reach for the coffee pot and fatty snacks.

uh okay- meat dairy vegetables eggs and milk AND caffeine are bad and give you morning sickness but eating just cereal is better for your baby? That is kind of funny actually! I love these ’studies’ that extrapolate big conclusions from very broad sweeps of ‘research’.
Oh well- at least it fuels debate! Sorry – thought I would fill in for your lack of snarky commentary! Sorry to hear Mary had a fever – but glad to hear you are getting some healthy outdoor time AND a rainy day break!
Thanks Sarah. Do you know something? I always found that eating protien that was slowly digested fairly often was the best “cure” for morning sickness.
