How the “Baby Psychic” Works

Further to my post on David Ogilvie, self-proclaimed baby psychic, Hsien-Hsien Lei who lives in the UK actually got a chance to watch the show. She commented both here and over at Supernanny Rules about this man’s mysterious powers.
According to Hsien-Hsien’s comments, it does look like Ogilvie uses a mixture of compassion and good sense to advise parents who desperately need a little help, understanding and sensitivity. Psychic? Baby mind reader? Probably not. I am instinctively in agreement with Helen, who despairs that so many people are just out of tune with their children.
That said, do we live in societies that need to view helpfulness, understanding and sensitivity as exotic, other-world talents? I believe that all of us are capable of treating our children and each other with those three qualities every day.

I think we have to remember that you and I are probably a little more educated and aware than a teenage mother from a poor area of London. It’s a shame that she didn’t get the help and support she needed from her own mum but it was clear from the show that their relationship was strained. Derek Ogilvie was sensitive enough to know that all the relationships in the family needed to be worked on not just the one between the baby and mum.
In general, society needs to work at being more kind and nurturing. Teenage moms like the one featured in Baby Mind Reader show is just another sign that some people are falling through the cracks.
Sorry, I also meant to say that Ogilvie’s schtick is just that. If the show helps him help more families, then what the heck. And, I’m sure some people watching the show will be thinking “Hmmm, maybe I oughta try giving my kids more veggies instead of another plate of chicken nuggets.” I think that’s great.
