It’s true that the children of preoccupied mothers have more opportunities to get into mischief.
I would just like to say that in providing my children with the opportunities to express themselves through mischief is cheaper than buying them new DVDs.
I, for one, am rather proud of the creativity, inventiveness, and independence my children have shown through various works of misbehavioural art.
Sure, the “Look, I made a pond!” episode was mildly frightening. Especially since he made it indoors. On carpet. And, our apartment is on the second floor.
But, easing his ten month-old sister out of her bed feet-first onto a pair of their father’s slippers and then sliding her across the floor to the kitchen in the “Look! Our baby has skates on” episode was sheer genius.
Thank you for posting this! I can’t help but be distracted/preoccupied when I’m thinking, dreaming, or pre-writing and I often feel guilty about that. Especially when some kid is saying, “MOM — I ASKED YOU….”
Ann- Your kids know when to “ask”, trust me. I come from a long line of preoccupied parents.
The last time my daughter got into ‘trouble’ like that it wasn’t of the art kind. She climbed up and got the sugar bowl, grabbed a spoon, hid in the corner and CHOWED DOWN. Think I’ve got an addict on my hands?
