Mama’s Breastmilk Ice Cream

This is one of those bizare news stories that I just had to share with ya’ll and get your opinions on. The latest in a favorite ice cream of mine, Ben & Jerry’s. How many of you have heard and love Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream? Okay, the scoop (no pun intended) is PETA woud like B&J to try replacing cows with moms. By this I mean instead of milking cows they want to begin using breastfeeding moms.
How many of you would seriously (knowingly) purchase ice cream that was made from a breastfeeding mother? I can honestly say I would probably never do it. I’m old-fashion and will stick with ice cream made from cows. It was one thing to be a child and to be breastfed, but not as an adult. Not to mention I don’t like the idea that my children would be eating ice cream made from another mother’s breastmilk. It just doesn’t sound right.
Peta believes it is unfair to the cows, I just can’t picture it. Before any of you run for the hills, Ben & Jerry has spoke back to the idea:
“We applaud PETA’s novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother’s milk is best used for her child,” spokesman Sean Greenwood said in an e-mail. He didn’t respond to requests for an interview.
What do you think? Would you be willing to donate your breastmilk? Or would you actually eat one? Let your kids? Speak up.

This idea is just ridiculous in so many way. I have so much more to say about this, but I’m going to leave it with this. PETA is for a good cause. I don’t believe in the unfair treatment of animals, but they go way overboard on a lot of things. This is one of them. I don’t feel comfortable or would I feel comfortable knowing my kids are drinking another mother’s breast.
Maybe it’s just the fact that we have always drank cows milk, even though it’s not as good for us as human breast milk would be, but it’s just a strange idea.
THIS folks, is one of the main reasons why I despise PeTA. Stupid demands like this.
They also wanted to change the name “Catskills” (as in, the really famous mountainous region of NY) because it was cruel. (Despite the fact that it’s Dutch and means “Cat’s Creek”.)
I HATE crap like this…
Oh, they also wanted to change the name of “Hamburg, NY” because it referred to ground up cows. Um, NOOOOOO, It refers to the thousands-of-years-old area in GERMANY, you ‘tards.
Oh, and to answer your questions, I’d die at 112 with never eating ice cream again if that happened.
Let’s not even THINK about the problems with human-human disease, okay? Fricken EW.
it’s just gross and I agree with Scott, I can’t picture having my kids eat/drink from another mom’s breastmilk.
Lara- I agree, that’s just one of those things I’m always worried about. (human to human)
There are two aspects to this concept: The “ethical” and the practical.
The concept of (an adult) consuming breast milk is one laden with taboo. But, in actuality, millions of women and their men (and lesbian women) share such a relationship, often for years and decades. A woman of any age can induce lactation for this purpose; the methods are well documented. Testimony is that adult breast feeding forms the most intimate relationship possible between two human beings. For those couples, their own ice cream would be a humorous extension of their intimacy. But, perhaps even for them, the concept of consuming the milk of an unknown female might be a stretch.
Practically, the idea cannot get off the ground primarily because of the unsurmountable health and sanitation issues, but equally because of the very limited quantity of milk present in even the most productive female compared with a bovine.
PETA gained some animal rights publicity from their statement, to be sure, but hopefully so also did the practice of Adult Nursing Relationships.
Don’t knock it till you try it
