Meeting Other Adults

I know as a new mom or even just a mom that it can be hard to meet the neighbors. Am I right? Some of us have it easy and it just happens naturally, others even try fake checking the mail just to get to it when others are there and hope to start a conversation. Yes, I’ve tried this, but it doesn’t always work. Sometimes you need more push.

I moved in my house around Jan/Feb, snow was on the ground and no one came out. I figured no one did because of the cold chill that went through and the risk of breaking one’s neck on the sidewalk. As the snow thawed I still saw no people, that’s when I realized they either stayed indoors or I was the only woman on the block and everyone else was just men. Wow!

As the month’s went on I watched out my window, but would only briefly spot a woman or two drive by. Maybe these were girlfriends or teens, I had no clue. Finally I met one, she was a girlfriend moving in with her kids. Phew, a woman at last….it would be a month before I’d see her again. It’s now summer, finally the woman have gathered outside. Some are work out of the home moms, others stay at home moms and two are work at home moms.

The kids have finally met a few kids on the street, which makes living on this quiet street bare-able. If you are a mom or a new mom, how did you strike up conversations with other “adults”?  We all know that hanging with the kids is a GREAT thing, but we also know that a little adult conversation is THE BEST. What are some pointers you have?

Well, I was going to talk about the kids, but you already mentioned that. How about asking, “Hey where did you get your shoes/outfit/haircut?” Or ask if they know a good family restuarant or a kid who does babysitting and then you could ask about a nice romantic restaurant, so that you could go out alone with your husband. ;D
