Mommy Brain

I’m not sure about you but I swear every time I have a child I lose brain cells or something. Do you know what I mean?  For instance, when I was pregnant I would tend to forget something such as car keys inside the car, after I locked it. Or maybe I forgot the checkbook at home once I got to the store, through the line and rung up. Of course I was always able to chalk it up to being pregnant. Tell me ya’ll have experienced this? Raise your hands, voice your forgotten things in the comments section.

Now that we agree that while you are pregnant you end up with the “pregnancy brain” and tend to forget the biggest or the smallest of things at least weekly.  According to reports there have been nothing official stating something actually does happen during pregnancy that makes you forget or have the “Pregnancy Brain” but after you’ve had a couple of children and experienced this, no one is going to tell ya different. (like I said, I’ve had four)

Doctors have blamed it on the lack of sleep, exercise or food. No clue if any one of these things is the actual cause.  If I were you, assuming you are pregnant, try to get the right amount of food and sleep as possible. This way you won’t forget something important before you walk out out the door, or so you don’t show up at your doctor appointment on the wrong day an hour early. Yep, that happened to me as well.

What about after your baby was born? Did you forget things then?  You know the small stuff like packing your child’s lunch but forgetting to put the actual lunch in the bag. Or maybe you went on a trip and forgot to get all the crayons out of the car on a very hot day. Still nothing? Wow, you are doing great. I’ve actually done each of these.  Maybe you forgot your grocery bag at the check out, or worse you left the gallon of ice cream in your car. If you found yourself guilty of this, just chalk it up to giving birth. Ya know I swear the wee ones just sucked that out of us.

So, tell me, once the kids are grown, will I eventually get those brain cells back? Or are they gone forever?

I wonder when the brain comes back. I find my memory isn’t as good – probably because I’m consumed with the minor details that keep me too busy to remember stuff. I think my brain goes on overload and the least important things get pushed off the cliff.

I called it Pregnesia, and the sad part is that it is ongoing. I think my brain is too full of the “big” stuff that the little stuff gets forgotten.

It’s nice to know it at least has a name :) Can I still claim this as my excuse 14 years later?

  4. Eliza Ferree says:

I’d say yes, as they sucked all those cells out when they were inside us. Then all the lack of sleep we’ve had worrying about them and all that running around, and, and, and….

I dont know if they come back..but I hope so. My daughter is two now..but when she was around 3 months old…I went to work, when I went to leave..I couldnt find my keys. So my boss walked with me out to my car, and there they were on the car seat. Umm that isnt the worse part..the worse part was when we came out there was a guy sitting in his car next to mine. He said…”Oh is that your car?” I said..yeah and preceeds to tell me how I left my car running when I got out of it to go into work..he pulled up shortly after and saw it running. THankfully..he turned it off and threw my keys on my seat.
