My Summer Reading Includes People Who Are Not Like Me

My summer reading includes people who are not just like me. One of the problems with modern marketing is that everything is a niche market, like this blog. While I love reading the blogs of other mothers who are just like me, I read books to escape to other worlds, other kinds of lives.

And, I love reading about this world and people who live lives close to mine, have similar experiences and just see it all differently because of one key difference, like race.

I just finished reading Who Does She Think She Is and loved her introduction to the world of African American princesses and finding your true self. While I read my Terri McMillan and, sure, I know exactly How Stella Got her Groove Back, I am really no expert in contemporary women’s fiction (ie Chick Lit) as interpreted by African American authors.

If this is a typical example of her novels, then I am going to start reading a lot more of the work of Benilde Little.

That looks like an interesting book! I’ll have to drop by amazon and take a peek. :)

I agree about the escape factor with unfamiliar lives. I sort of see books as tourism! I’ve read a few books now in which the main character has been a teacher and I just can’t get into them. I’m already a teacher and it’s just too familiar to be of interest. (Though I have a few exceptions!)
