My Weight Loss Tip

My son has a taste for ketchup sandwiches. Little did I know, this weirdness would help my own weight loss efforts.

When I started Weight Watchers, I knew that learning portion control and point control were going to be challenging. The most difficult part is controlling the amount of bread I want to eat with the amount I should eat in order to lose weight, which I must do in order to start running again without hurting my back and joints.

This has severely dampened both my toast and sandwich habit.

There are few things in this world that can embody perfection, but toast and sandwiches get close. The wheat we use to make bread is called the staff of life for a reason. All the nutrients that sustain us are in a single loaf. Toast makes that sustenance warm and nurtures as it nourishes. The sandwich is an often under-rated meal. Easily assembled, adaptable to seasonal produce and personal choice and portable.

Where I live in Germany, people tend to eat bread and cheese with salami or ham for breakfast and dinner. Lunch is the main meal of cooked food. It’s not a bad system. Bread comes in more varieties and is usually bakery fresh. I’ve gained quite a bit of weight since we moved here, and not just because this is where I have experienced pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood.

Anyway, filling my once-a-day sandwich with reduced-fat cheese and turkey has left me feeling less than satisfied. Fat packs flavor and not getting enough to taste leaves me wanting a second sandwich. So, what have I added to my daily bread? No, not ketchup. That was the inspiration.

Salsa. As hot as I can get it.

And it really has helped me feel fuller.
