Our Summer “Holiday”

I’ve never seen this movie, but it is a nice lead-in to talking about our summer holiday…

Every summer, my family and I travel to Bulgaria where my husband was born. Being a freelancer with an Internet connection, this means I can take my job with me where ever we might happen to go. This has advantages and disadvantages. When I need to spend some time thinking away from the pressures of speaking Bulgarian and family life, then I have the excuse of work. However, work is not an escape. It’s an obligation and I have to take it seriously. Which means, I am, like most women, constantly battling between the worries of spending too much time away from my family and spending too much time away from work.

It’s resulted in some interesting work-life combinations. Like the time I had to expand a travel piece about nudist etiquette in Germany while typing in a public Internet Cafe with my three year-old in my lap. As a result of that experience, I compromised and worked for half of our time in Bulgaria and “rested” for the other half of the time while taking care of the kids and the house here. The three weeks I spent off-line were more difficult than I could have imagined.

So, this year, I am trying something new. I’ve pre-written posts to publish while we’re away and I will be checking in with fresh wisdom, new studies and breaking news when ever I can find the time. I hope the mix of stored and fresh blogging will keep you interested in Babylune.
