Pass the Donuts

Tim Horton was a famous Canadian hockey player who died in a terrible car crash. Today, his name lives on in the form of a chain of donut shops he founded. I bring this up for two reasons. The first is that Tim Horton’s Donuts is something of a Canadian institution even though it is now owned by the same American conglomerate that owns Wendy’s Hamburgers. To understand what Tim’s means culturally in this region you have to combine coffee as good as Starbuck’s without the snootiness, the social aspect of a neighbourhood British pub, and the sweet fix of a donut that is only about half as greasy as most others.
The second reason is that I watched something called The Mom Show on the Life Network yesterday. The talk show was a room full of women and a guy called Dr. Dave speaking about losing baby weight. The show didn’t tell me anything I didn’t know or that I haven’t written about here. Still, it was good hear other women speaking about a topic I live with in my own language and accent. After being away from Canada for almost 2 years, it was exactly what I needed.
That said, everyone knows a woman trying to lose 6 kg of baby weight should not eat donuts. But I haven’t been home in almost two years (have I already mentioned that?) and I wanted my son to have an authentic Canadian experience. So, we got a 20 pack of Timbits to share with my sister and her daughter. Again, it was exactly what I needed.
At least we walked to the donut store….in the freezing cold! That’s got to make the whole experience healthier.

Yumm! I concur! I totally miss Tim’s – I love the apple fritters! They only have it in Michigan not Illinois… we stock up every road trip home!
