74 Babies Born at NYC Hospital in 48 Hours

There’s a mini baby boom happening in New York City, within a 48 hour time period 74 babies were born at the

New York City Hospital in Brooklyn. No one knows what’s caused this boom, maybe it’s the weather or maybe it is just the closest hospital. It might even be the fact that two local hospitals had to close its doors.

Hospital spokeswoman Eileen Tynion says that veteran staff often swap stories about spikes in baby births, but couldn’t recall such a tyke-storm as the one that began on Tuesday. She says once or twice a year about 65 babies are born over 48 hours.

The usual tempo for the hospital is about 20 bundles of joy a day.

The hospital is use to having 20 babies being born a day but never 74 in two days. They even had to open up the east wing after one was filled to capacity (60 beds).

Teaching My Son About Memorial Day

This will be my son’s first true Memorial Day, for us this is a big day as we’ve always taken the kids down to the cemetary to remember those that were lost. As many of you are aware we are a military family, I always was growing up (dad was Air Force and then I married a Marine) and we got out of the Marine Corps a bit ago but joined the Army Reserves. However, none of that will ever change the way we feel about Memorial Day. We began taking the kids to the cemetary when they began asking questions and when our oldest told us it was a day (the teacher told him) that everyone has a picnic. This disgusted us and we explained.

Out here they don’t have an area just for the fallen soldiers so we’ll just walk over to our local cemetary and give respect. Already though this town has surprised us.

We drove by earlier today and my son (age 2) pointed out all the flags in the sky, course he kept calling them balloons. Every few bars on the top of the iron-gated fence had a flag at the top of it and throughout the entire cemetary little flags were scattered around. I can’t wait to start bringing this tradition to him and teaching him what we taught the other three kids. I hope he comes to respect this day like the others have.

Officer Saves Baby Sea Lion

Down ink Richmond a baby sea lion somehow got a little too far from the water and found itself on the Richmond expressway. Thankfully an officer saw this young sea lion and called a volunteer with the Marine Mammal Center was able to help.

Don’t think this little guy made catching him easy. She played with the volunteer and officer for a while, went into hiding under the police car, running (bouncing) around the vehicle as they came closer and back under the car. They’ve already named her Moody too, but not because of her mood, the officer that found her is Bradley Moody. I think it’s fitting and who knows she may grow moody.  They soon discovered she was very malnourished, but now that she is at the center we can all rest knowing they’ll take proper care for her.

Baby Used as Weapon

I was shocked when this piece of news came across my email. But Memphis police are searching for a woman that used a baby to get away from security guards. Talk about someone being a coward. This woman was inside Wal-Mart when she was caught shoplifting. She grabbed her 2-month old nephew and tossed him at a guard coming at her and got away.

The poor baby was actually in its carrier (carseat) when he was tossed, fell onto the concrete and she grabbed the carrier and took off. Once again tossing him at a good samaritan that was trying to help the baby. She did get away in a blue Ford Escort leaving her sister (or sister-in-law) in the bathroom and her nephew on the ground. What an aunt. (people should treat her the way she just did that baby)ERRR.

All news states the baby is fine, but if you listen to the news channel the baby was knocked unconscious when he landed on the concrete. But they did take him to the hospital and he is expected to do fine. This lady needs some serious help, course I’m wondering if she’ll ever go near her sister now.

Top 10 Baby Names for 2009

The one thing that can get a soon-to-be mom or dad in an argument is baby names. Either one person doesn’t like it, they can’t find one, time is getting closer, family members don’t like it, someone has something to say or would like a name. Either way it is also fun to look at baby names and here is the top 10 baby names for 2009. Is your child’s name on the list? Mine aren’t, but mine aren’t very common either.

Baby Put on Diet

I can’t even believe I just typed those words, but it seems a baby that is to skinny is now being put on a diet of 2000 calories. Why? Well, the baby was to thin. Apparently she was born prematurely and is still severely underweight, so much that it concerns not only her family but the doctors. They want this precious little girl to catch up to what others her age would weigh.

The little girl only weight a little less than 17 pounds and is 16 month old, that’s a pound per month she’s been alive almost. This little baby has been through it all too, in just a few short months she had:

a brain hemorrhage, chronic lung disease, an open heart duct, life-threatening high blood pressure and an immature gut, which meant she was unable to digest milk.

She was allowed to go home with her parents at 3-and-a-half months but was still suffering from reflux, where stomach contents come back into the esophagus or mouth and make babies stop breathing.

Doesn’t that just make you sad and want to find her and give her one giant hug? I bet it does. Either way this girl is a survivor and while most kids would love to hear they get to eat the following this is actually the prescribed diet from the doctor:

special diet, eating foods like yogurt, roast duck and pork, pesto, vegetables cooked in olive oil, chocolate and milky desserts.

Octomom Wants a Pig

Nadya Suleman already has her hands full with 14 children, 8 of which are newborns but she still wants to add one more to her household. One more?!? Okay, so it isn’t a baby but she does want to add a pet pig to the mix.

Apparently the kids have been asking for a few years if they could have a dog, she’s been reluctant and I can understand why. But now after just bringing home the youngest she wants to add something else to the household. My own kids have been asking for a pet for years, every time I “think” about it I look at all the training it will take and decide against it. Maybe because she has nannies she doesn’t have to do all the cleaning babies, spit up on outfits, diaper changings, etc. Who will she hire for the pig?

It isn’t 100% what or if she really will get one, she’s even tossed out there she’s willing to get one of those purse puppies. You know the Pomeranian or tea cup pups. I think she looks at is if they are tiny they won’t get in the way, but with 14 kids the pup/pig might get stomped on.

What do you think? Should she wait for a pet?

Ohio Zoo Wants You to Name Baby Elephant

The Ohio Zoo recently had a baby elephant born, the only problem is they couldn’t determine a name. They opened it up to the public and have narrowed it down to four names but they need YOUR vote. Here are the names:

- Beco
- Damai
- Sattva
- Siddharth

Go to Columbus Zoo to vote and come back here and tell me which one you are rooting for. I’m going for Beco because it is one that reminds me of a sweet candy and my kids would be able to pronounce it easier. Not to mention Baby Beco just goes together. The winning name will be announced on Mother’s Day, May 10th.

5 Baby Safety Tips

I got an email today from The Rosen Group, they are going to have an article in the May issue of ShopSmart on baby accidents. Did you know over 64,000 children under 5 get hurt from things that could’ve been prevented every year? Frightening if you ask me.

BATHING
Not Safe: Using a baby bath seat. Toddlers sometimes slip through the leg holes and often try to climb out of or over the seat. The seat can also dislodge and tip over.
Safer Bet: Bathe your toddler in an adult or toddler tub with a small amount of water. And never turn away from your baby during bath time, even for a second, even when you’re just filling the tub with water.

BOUNCY SEATS
Not Safe: Placing a baby bouncy seat on an elevated or soft surface. Your baby’s movement could rock the seat to the edge of a counter or table and cause it to tip over or fall to the floor. And soft surfaces are a suffocation hazard if the seat should tip.
Safer Bet: Put the bouncy seat on the floor.

CHANGING TABLES
Not Safe: Using a changing table with only two or three side barriers. In the split second it takes to turn away to grab a diaper or wipe, an active baby can roll over and tumble to the ground.
Safer Bet: Changing tables with barriers on four sides of the top comply with voluntary safety-testing standards. Always use the safety straps on the changing table or pad, and never leave your baby unattended even for a moment, even if you’re using the safety straps and you’re sure your baby is secure.

WALKERS
Not Safe: Using a walker. The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended a ban on walkers, and they are banned in Canada. These products can allow babies to scoot into danger and might even delay their development. Despite the name, a walker lets a baby simulate walking but doesn’t really help her acquire the skills she needs.
Safer Bet: A stationary activity center—an all-in-one, molded-plastic play station that doesn’t have wheels— is a safer way for your baby to have fun and get a little exercise.

HIGH CHAIRS
Not Safe: Relying on a high chair’s tray instead of using the safety belt. It doesn’t prevent your child from standing up and possibly falling out of the chair or slipping under the tray.
Safer Bet: Fasten the safety harness, even when your baby is in a reclining position. Also, your child should always be in your view when she is sitting in a high chair.

STROLLERS
Not Safe: Skipping the stroller’s safety straps. The stroller can tip and kids can bolt out of it unexpectedly. Also, you never know when you could hit a bump that could cause a nasty tumble.
Safer Bet: Be sure to use the five-point safety harness on your stroller even if you’re just wheeling your child up the block or strolling slowly.

STORAGE
Not Safe: Overloading a stroller with packages and bags. Hanging heavy bags or a purse on a stroller’s handles can cause it to tip over and injure your child.
Safer Bet: Store your stuff in the basket or storage area underneath the stroller. Check the product directions for weight limits so you don’t overload that area.
