IMG: Sxc.hu

27, was breastfeeding when police showed up to her home for a domestic disturbance. At the time Stacey Anvarinia was found “extremely intoxicated,” slurring her words and breastfeeding her baby. Her infant was only 6-weeks-old at the time. The judge at that point gave her a 6 month sentence where she would need to go to a substance abuse facility to clean up. In June she admitted to being guilty of the charges. Many moms were outraged that she was even put behind bars for this, but this was the only way they thought they could prevent harm for the tiny baby.

Stacey did not stay out of trouble, instead she slashed (or some man is reporting she did) some guy’s tires at her apartment complex, only hours after her hearing earlier this month. When police arrived to her apartment they found her hiding inside a closet and looked not only drunk but she had cuts on her wrists, which made them take her directly to a hospital. It has been just about six months, which means if she had been attending the facility she wouldn’t have dealt with all this, instead, she will now be sitting behind bars while someone else is taking care of her infant.

The fine is $2000 and she will go to trial on September 24th, currently she is pleading not guilty.

Grand Fork’s Herald Reports:

Police arrested Anvarinia Friday night, just hours after her sentencing, at her apartment in Grand Forks. The owner of a pickup parked in the apartment building’s lot told police that Anvarinia slashed one of the truck’s tires.

Citing a report, the judge said officers found Anvarinia hiding in a closet and appearing intoxicated. The judge said Anvarinia resisted arrest and that she had cuts on her wrist which prompted authorities to take her to Altru Hospital before transporting her to the Grand Forks County jail.

Anvarinia was consequently charged with criminal mischief and preventing arrest, both are Class A misdemeanors punishable with up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Normally I’m for the breastfeeding mother, however in this case she was given a chance once before and it sounds like she blew it. I hope they figure out how to help her, but most importantly help that little baby. What do you think should happen to Stacey Anvarinia? Should she go to jail for slashing the man’s tires? Obviously she won’t get in much trouble for drinking inside her apartment, unless it was part of the sentence when she was found breastfeeding while drunk.

Even the La Leche League states that you should NOT breastfeed your baby while intoxicated and that you should wait until you are sober. Currently it is unknown what her blood alcohol level was and even if she was drunk. The assistant state’s attorney, Carmel Mattison has stated this will be the first time they’ve accused any mother of breast-feeding while drunk.

A lactation consultant in Altru had this to say:

“No matter how little you drink, you are potentially exposing your baby to alcohol. You need to make that decision for yourself.” – Dee Grabanski

According to the La Leche League FAQ:

Mothers who are intoxicated should not breastfeed until they are completely sober, at which time most of the alcohol will have left the mother’s blood. Drinking to the point of intoxication, or binge drinking, by breastfeeding mothers has not been adequately studied. Since all of the risks are not understood, drinking to the point of intoxication is not advised.
