Attitudes toward and medical recommendations on drinking alcohol during pregnancy have always varied from country to country, culture to culture. Drinking, at present, is almost always associated with excess in much of North America and guidelines have suggested that women don’t drink any alcohol during pregnancy. In Europe, where a glass of wine or beer is considered part of the daily lunch or supper menu, recommendations have been along the lines of one “traditional-size” glass a day with the main meal of the day.
