Many states in the US have a Safe Haven Laws, please check to see if your state does if you do not want or cannot have your newborn baby. It is not safe to leave them abandoned on the side of the road, in a trash bag or anywhere else where it may not be seen. Don’t just knock on someone’s door and leave the baby on a porch. It is not safe to leave them abandoned on the side of the road, in a trash bag or anywhere else where it may not be seen. Don’t just knock on someone’s door and leave the baby on a porch. Remember some people will take a step to check, they do not want to feel a baby under their foot or a scream.

Here are safe haven laws for the states recently in the news:

Ohio (baby found in grassy area)

A newborn can be left anonymously at a police station, fire station or hospital up to 30 days after birth. (without prosecution) Make sure to leave the baby with an actual person, not just at the door.

Florida (baby girl in box)

A newborn up to 3 days old or younger may be left at a hospital, fire station or emt station.

Illinois

A newborn baby 72 hours or younger may be left by a parent at a hospital, EMT or fire station.

Missouri

A newborn up to 30 days old or younger may be left by a biological parent or a person acting on behalf of the parent with a staff member of a hospital, EMT or firefighter.

I know some of you will already know this but there are others that don’t and I’d love to hear all of your opinions. At the moment I’m on the fence and I’ll explain why. There is a new safe haven law in Nebraska and here is a quote:

Nebraska’s new safe-haven law allowing parents to abandon unwanted children at hospitals with no questions asked is unique in a significant way: It goes beyond babies and potentially permits the abandonment of anyone under 19.

I saw this on my local news today and they were interviewing a few asking what they thought, then they went to one mom that has done this and to a psycologist. At first I thought oh this is nice, especially for those families of abuse. Now they won’t have to hit their kids. But then I started thinking, now it is just too easy. You are going to have families that just get fed up during those teens years and say f’it and give up on their kid. How does anyone think these children will feel?

The worse was when the newscaster or director of the “Safe Haven” made the comment, “this isn’t permanent, the parent can come back a week later, a month, 6 months, etc and take their child back.” I was left with my floor on the ground. First thought was oh so this is FREE daycare/babysitter. Imagine the summer, the child is home and the parent wants that cruise so bad that he/she decides time to give up and place the child in the Safe Haven, I’ll come back after my cruise to get them.

I’m not saying this will happen but it was my thought. It disgusted me, while I’m happy those abused children will have a place to go something yells it won’t happen anyways. Will an abusive parent do that? Most of these stories I write about with babies or see on the news they’ve already been through CPS and stuff. What makes them think these parents will just drop their kids off? I’m hoping they would but it just sounds so horrible. Then you begin thinking, how would the teen feel? Or a younger child? Like I said I’m torn on this one as I can see it being good for those that really need it but not for those that don’t. Your thoughts?
