IMG: Sxc.hu

How did you determine what to use with your toddler? What will you use with your toddler? Below are a list of some parenting techniques:

Time Out- I will not lie, while this tactic works for some it does not work for all. Yes, I do know that SuperNanny would yell at me for saying this but it is true. Try it first to see if it will work and like SuperNanny always said, make sure you get to their level, explain what you are doing calmly and stick with it.

Do know that your child may stand up instead of sit down during a time out, just to provoke you. They may walk out of the time out or purposely move to another location to do the time out. They are testing you just like you are testing them.

Corner- Some people will stick a chair in the corner of a room and have their child stay there for a desired amount of time. Normally two minutes, since they are only two they won’t know the difference in time. No matter what it’ll feel like forever to them. Set a timer up and show them that when it dings they can get up, but remember to explain why they are there.

Once again, this doesn’t always work. A child can be amused by the smallest things, as a child I remember making shapes out of the way the paint had formed on the wall. Other children tend to spit at the wall, I’m unsure why but I remember a child that my neighbor babysat use to do this.

No- Firmly tell the child no, this is normally the first resort but it tends to be forgotten as we’ve instructed our children since birth not to do certain things. Make sure your son or daughter knows that “No” means no.

What are a few other discipline methods you can think of for a toddler?

If you are mom, you have surely felt the “Mom Guilt” many moms of yesterday and today have felt. This particular guilt stems from wanting some time for just yourself. Have you been there? Ever wonder what it would be like to drink a coffee at a shop and maybe sitting down and reading a book while your there?

No mom should ever have to feel guilty about wanting just a little bit of time for herself but she does. Why? Probably because when our children come they are always our first priority so we feel guilty when we don’t want them with us. Truth is it isn’t that we don’t want them with us but we want to be us. You know that person hidden under the vomit, accident stains, unruly hair and no make up face. We want to chip off just a bit and see if it is really us that lays beneath it.

If you have a child and haven’t had the luxury of having a “time for yourself,” my suggestion to you is to do it. Tell the spouse you need to get out, even if it is only for an hour to go to the bookstore and do it. Don’t sit around waiting for it to happen, because before you know it time will pass. Sure you’ll be able to do it once they all start school but do you want to wait that long? The answer is no, yes, you’ll surely feel guilty but you’ll also get a renewed feeling. Trust me, you’ll make up for the time you’ve been away the moment you see your child.

If you get a time for yourself, would you mind listing your tips here?
