Teaching My Son About Memorial Day

This will be my son’s first true Memorial Day, for us this is a big day as we’ve always taken the kids down to the cemetary to remember those that were lost. As many of you are aware we are a military family, I always was growing up (dad was Air Force and then I married a Marine) and we got out of the Marine Corps a bit ago but joined the Army Reserves. However, none of that will ever change the way we feel about Memorial Day. We began taking the kids to the cemetary when they began asking questions and when our oldest told us it was a day (the teacher told him) that everyone has a picnic. This disgusted us and we explained.
Out here they don’t have an area just for the fallen soldiers so we’ll just walk over to our local cemetary and give respect. Already though this town has surprised us.

We drove by earlier today and my son (age 2) pointed out all the flags in the sky, course he kept calling them balloons. Every few bars on the top of the iron-gated fence had a flag at the top of it and throughout the entire cemetary little flags were scattered around. I can’t wait to start bringing this tradition to him and teaching him what we taught the other three kids. I hope he comes to respect this day like the others have.
