The Top Ten Definitions of Motherhood

In my experience, there are a multitude of ways to define motherhood, whether individual mothers are created through biology or adoption. These ten definitions don’t apply to everyone, but four out of ten is probably about average.

10. Motherhood often a contradictory emotional state. Blame it when you feel both guilty and more loving when disguised as a non-mother.

9. Motherhood is an individual and variable profession. Its practitioners often feel the need to explain their methods and outcomes.

8. Motherhood is a nurturing act performed by female mammals.

7. Motherhood is, for better or worse, political.

6. The act of motherhood is often the spiritual center of a woman’s being.

5. Motherhood is a complicated state to embrace. It is not easily undertaken.

4. Motherhood is becoming more accessible to more women.

3. Motherhood often means, in the public sphere, that a woman can never be right about anything.

2. Motherhood means that daddy doesn’t come first in mommy’s life any more.

1. Motherhood is love.

What is motherhood to you?

Great post!! I love this idea, and may have to steal it for a follow up post. I’m terrible at linking into my own blog! Yet, I’ve written some great things.

All of your posts are lovely, smart and true!

  3. Even all the bad bits of being a mom when added up together mean nothing compared to a heartfelt, unprompted cuddle. Love your post & thanks for stopping by mine

    This is a great list!

  5. Sunny says:

Really like the way you did this! 3,5,and 6 hit home with me the most, though they all are very true. Daddy would certainly agree with 2, but he’s taking it well!

  6. childlife says:

Very cleverly crafted post - My favorite was “a contradictory emotional state”… Well said!
