13 Ways to Lose that Postpartum Weight

1 Get yourself a training, that’s what the celebrities do. Of course I don’t think they have a ton of bills to pay and debt to get out of. Am I right?

2 Make a realistic goal, don’t think in the first week you’ll lose 20 lbs. If you do lose that much you need to contact a doctor.

3 Cut out the soda and replace them with water. Did you know ice cold water helps burn calories? It’s true.

4 Exercise. This doesn’t have to be much, jump on the bike, treadmill or even take a stroll with your child. The weather is getting warmer in most parts, head out and enjoy it.

5 Eat healthier, not only does it help you but if you are breastfeeding it’ll benefit your child. If not at least you’ll be a bit more energized so you can watch your little one. www.MyPyramid.gov has a great diet plan.

6 Breastfeed your baby, it is said to lose 500 calories every time you do it. Currently this is NOT working for me. Course eating out doesn’t help with that.

7 Eat out less. Or if you are going to eat out look at what you are eating.

8 Play with your child. It’s true, playing outside with your child helps lose the weight. A game of tag, zoo or tossing a ball (frisbee) is a ton of fun and will give your child memories that’ll last.

9 Eat right and by this I mean a more organized schedule. Just because you a meal doesn’t mean you are doing good. You should be eating three meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. This doesn’t mean to eat lunch at 4 when the older kids are home (I’m guilty of this), or to skip a meal. By skipping a meal you’ll try making up for it later.

10 Stop snacking and if you must snack grab some health foods. Carrots, apples, etc are great for the body and actually taste good.

11 Work-out tapes, these are said to really help moms out in losing weight. I just wish I could stay more focused with them.

12 Dress yourself up. Believe it or not, putting makeup on or even dressing nicely can help with the self-esteem which ends up helping you lose the weight without you really trying.

13 Don’t listen to everyone, losing weight can take time. Stick with it and you’ll be happy you did.

It’s actually around 500 calories per day not per hour.

Kellymom has a great reference on food intake post-partum. http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/mom/mom-calories-fluids.html

Also, I used the nine/ten months to gain, nine/ten months to lose mentality and that really helped.

Six smaller meals are better than 3 HUGE meals, which brings me to…

… PORTION CONTROL! Look at our plate. Fill it 2/3 full of steamed/raw veggies and 1/3 with meat. Learn other little tricks too– use a smaller plate, keep meat portions the size of your fist, etc.

I will be doing a lot of these things come July. Thanks for stopping by, Maribeth

  5. What a great list you’ve put together :) The breastfeeding and walking definitely helped me.

Now that I’m no longer breastfeeding, I clearly need to start icing my water and dressing better ;)
