FamilyFun Boredom Busters: 365 Games, Crafts & Activities For Every Day of the Year

If you live in the USA, you probably don’t get enough maternity leave to get bored, but if you’ve decided to work from home or not work for the time being, though, you may find yourself feeling at loose ends, needing to get out and have some adult conversation or experiences. The trouble being that you’re on a budget and can’t afford a babysitter. Here are the top five ways for you and the baby to get out without breaking the budget.

5. Go to the movies. The Reel Moms program has special screening for parents with little babies in tow. Loews’ progrma is much hyped, but many independent cinemas have been running matinees for parents with babies for several years.

4. Go to the library. Little babies are often too young for reading programs, but becoming familiar with the environment and staff will help your child adapt to the programs when s/he is old enough to attend. Not to mention, books are a great form of escapism for you too.

3. Join a stroller-walking group. Take those daily walks as part of a social group or exercise program.
2. Volunteer. Many organizations pair shut-ins or people in rest homes with volunteer visitors. You and your baby couldbe the highlight of a senior’s day.

1. Join a mommy-baby group at a local church, temple or community centre. New mothers need each other and, once crawling starts, babies need each other too.

The Loews has apparently discontinued the Reel Moms program, after being bought out by AMC or whoever last year. Their listings haven’t been updated for a year. ::sob::

However, National Amusements offers a similar program, in addition to some local independents.

And the local independents have better movies.

  3. Ratphooey says:

Except that none of mine offer such a program, despite intense lobbying.

  4. kbaggott says:

Can I help with some lobbying? Send the URL for the local independents….

  1. [...] Ratphooey told me that Philadelphia doesn’t have a “movies for mommies” program like the very successful program run by Canada’s independent cinemas. Strangely enough, Philadephia has an independent chain of cinemas called the Ritz. This is how their mission statement reads: [...]
