Whenever It Works

I am not completely obsessed with the Generous December Group Writing Project. Just because I check the comments fields of the main post, part one and part two about twenty times a day to see if there are enough entries to write part three yet, does not mean I am completely obsessed. I have other things to think about. There’s also Project Blog, a bunch of contests, my writing career, my day job and, mostly, the kids to think about.

Plus, Scribbit is hosting a Group Writing Project too. Her assignment is to write on the topic “my favorite day.”

It’s the kind of assignment that, like the Generous December Group Writing Project, is profoundly positive. It also reminds me how much time I waste whining and complaining when things are, in fact, mostly just fine.

In fact, I have more than one favorite day. In fact today was one of my favorites.

My favorite days are the ones when everything just works. We wake up on time, everyone is healthy, everything I need to pack up for the day is available or pre-packed, the car is not covered in frost, traffic flows, the day care is open, the lovely staff are on-time and in good moods, my daughter kisses me good-bye and starts playing with her friends, and I go to work and see a light go on in a student’s eyes and know that I have managed to communicate something and helped them learn.

Really learn.

Then, I pick up my girl who says good-bye to her friends without a fuss.

Traffic flows.

I pick up my boy.

Together, we finish our errands, spend some time together and no one even thinks of crying or being unreasonable. And then, we have dinner, some silly time and bath and stories and kisses goodnight and bed. At the end of the day, on my favorite days, we are all tired, but happy because we pulled it off. It actually worked. The whole day worked for all of us.

  1. I know what you mean, sometimes the simple pleasures are the most enduring.

Those are the best kind of days. For me, those little moments mean so much more than the big ticket ones we race to, race through, and then forget.

  3. Daisy says:

Ah, those smooth days. So rare, and so beautiful.

Robin & Daisy- Thanks so much for understanding the beauty of a day going according to plan.
