The Laws of Harmony

A couple of months ago I was contacted about reading a book called, The Laws of Harmony. I love doing book reviews, although sometimes it feels kind of weird because this is, after all, a cooking blog.  I said I would and pretty soon the book arrived at my door.

The reason that I could review it comfortably and talk about it here is that the main character is pretty definitely a foodie. Other than that  there are no recipes or anything.

It took me awhile to get into this book for several reasons.  I dislike swearing. I know that it is a fact of life for many people but not me.  I have picked up the habit of saying *freaking* once in awhile and even that bothers me.  This book was not stuffed with swearing but there was enough that I had to get past it.

Once I did I found an excellent story line with twists and turns that I did  not predict.  The characters seemed real to me, their responses seemed real and I was intrigued by them.  More than once I was pleasantly surprised and intrigued  by a twist in the plot.  The main character, Sunny, grows through the book and I like that.  I like how her relationship with her mother is real with all of the conflicts and confusion that that can bring.

Growing up on a commune Sunny just wanted to be normal.  On her own as an adult she still just wants a normal life, whatever that is.  She pursues the future, and tries to leave the past behind but it seems to find her no matter what she does or where she goes.  Eventually she comes to terms with who she was and who she is, and learns to create a working synergy between her past and her present.  It is a task that we all face, what to bring with us into our futures, what to leave in the past, and how to separate the two.  You will grow, think, and reevaluate as you read this book.  There is just no way around it.

I found Sunny to be a strong woman, a well developed character, and a constantly evolving presence in the book  I don’t read much because of my schedule but this book was worth the time it took to read it and I will more than likely read it again.  Want to know more about Judi Hendricks?  Check out her blog and even find a recipe for Sunny’s Blackberry Brownies.

Sounds like a good read! The brownies sound interesting too.

I thought they did…and then I got to thinking about white chocolate brownies (whities?) with blackerry puree swirled through …so now that’s on my list of things to develop…soon.

Thank you for taking the time to read and review The Laws of Harmony! I thought there were recipes in it too but it sounds like it was mostly references to food rather than actual recipes. But I’m glad you liked the book anyway. Thanks again!

Lisamm, I will check again but I was pretty sure there weren’t. Anyway the book was a great read. Thanks for the opportunity.

Great book review!! It’s nice to take a break from pure food every once and a while :)

  4. Marye, this looks great. I wound up a making a fish curry with my fresh fish from the harbour so have made this salsa without the beans as an accompaniment.
