When Is Organic not Organic?

According to Eric Burkett of the Dallas Food and Drink Examiner, maybe when you buy generic.

Say it isn’t so!

Eric says that many stores are not being upfront about where they get their organic milk, including the one I tend to purchase when our goats are dry, Safeway brand.

Isn’t he cute? He is one of our baby goats from this past spring.  About an hour old in this picture.

Here in Dallas, where I live, milk is right at about 2.59 a gallon for generic, 5.99 a gallon for generic organic, and 6.49 to 6.99 a gallon for Horizon, about the only non-generic organic milk available in my town.  Interesting that Horizon was given extremely low scores and described as basically an organic factory farm.

Consider that when our goats are dry (about 3-4 months a year) we use about a gallon of milk a day around here and you can see that it adds up pretty fast.  So, I was considering cutting out of the farming lifestyle because my life is SO hectic but now I guess I will stick.  After all, I know where the milk is coming from, I know how fresh it is, it is raw, it is milked from goats that have happy lives…and it is certainly low carbon footprint since it is only transported by foot) about 50 feet.  Same goes for the eggs and chickens.

Read what Eric has to say.  I am not easily surprised but this surprised me for sure.

exactly the reason I can’t be bothered buying organic…who can you trust anymore? …seems we are just tossing away more cash…if you grow it yourself… at least you know from whence it came. Maybe the one thing that makes me wish I had a property…..
