Breastfeeding: A Universal Language

WordPress tells me when a blog or other website links to Breastfeeding 1-2-3. I was surprised and pleased to see one day that a website in Arabic had linked to mine! That got me to wondering what the words “breastfeeding” and “breastfeed” look like in other languages. I used Google Translate to find out (so please forgive me if these are not exactly correct!)
Breastfeeding and Breastfeed
Arabic: الرضاعه من الصدر and ارضع
Spanish: Lactancia and Amamantar
French: L’allaitement maternel and Allaiter
German: Stillen and Stillen
Italian: Allattamento and Allattare
Portuguese: Amamentação and Amamentar
Just for kicks I used the feature that allows you to translate an entire webpage, and I took a screenshot of one of my previous posts, in Russian!

You might be able to tell from that translation that “breastfeeding” in Russian is
“Грудное вскармливание” (and “breastfeed” is “Кормления грудью.”)

Awesome!
I wish Typepad had that kind of alert thing…

Hey, you forgot Hebrew. I dont know how to type with a hebrew font, but the phonetically breastfeeding in hebrew says:
Le’hanik (to nurse)
hanaka (nursing)
Eilat, thanks for the addition! I translated into whatever languages the program translates from English. Some my computer did not support the characters. I don’t think it even offered Hebrew, though!
