All of the breastfeeding advocates who recently participated in the Applebee’s nurse-ins might want to channel their renewed activist energy into the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge 2007, which takes place on September 29, 2007, at sites across Canada and the United States. The Quintessence Foundation of Vancouver, British Columbia, developed the challenge in the spirit of friendly competition to promote the benefits of breastfeeding. Quintessence explains:
This fun event is a challenge for which geographic area (province, state or territory) has the most breastfeeding babies, as a percentage of the birthrate, “latched on” at 11am local time.
Last year there were 4,687 babies at 156 sites across Canada and the United States. Visit the Breastfeeding Challenge 2007 site for more information, all the sample materials you need for planning your own event, and a list of sites registered so far. The current count stands at 147 sites, with 12 of those sites in the United States (we can do better than that, can’t we Americans?!) Events range from just a few mothers getting together to be “counted,” to education conferences, lunches, and fundraising events.
Thanks to Tales of Life with a Girl on the Go for reminding me of this annual event!
