Breastfeeding Product Reviews: Mother’s Milk Tea

This week I am looking for your input on Traditional Medicinals Organic Mother’s Milk Tea (16 bags). The Baby Book
says, “Herbal teas promoted as galactagogues (substances that increase milk supply) are harmless and may work, though there are no scientific studies that confirm this. Herbs to be avoided or used with caution during lactation include comfrey, sassafras, ginseng, and licorice.” p. 157.
Have you tried Mother’s Milk Tea (either the regular or organic versions)? How did it taste? Did you find that it helped your milk supply at all? Did you use it in combination with any other techniques or any medications? Leave a comment with your product review — short, long, good, or bad!

I used the Organic Mother’s Milk tea for a variety of reasons. When I went back to work, I was worried about getting enough milk via pumping (after nursing on demand for 9 months… no one said I was logical), so I started drinking the tea and taking fenugreek and blessed thistle. After I stopped pumping (but continued nursing), I continued to drink the tea. I was still off of coffee at that point and enjoyed the warm drink.
I thought the taste was rather bland– warm water with hardly any additional flavor, but until I got pregnant, I was drinking more potent teas, so I might not be the best judge on the strength of taste.
I could definitely tell the difference, but I was also taking the funugreek and blessed thistle.
I recommend it to friends who think they might not pump enough, but also encourage them to look in to other options/alternatives or use it in combination. A couple of friends have used it and had it work for them, but they used the tea alone and not in combination.
I can’t tell you anything about its effectiveness, but I did try it when my wife bought some a while back, and I remember that it tasted like every other (non-fruity) herbal tea — i.e., somewhat unpleasant.
I tired Mother’s Milk Tea from Whole Foods and boy did it ever get my milk going. It was Day 6 and my milk still hadn’t come in. My doula brought some over and I drank and drank and drank. Milk started Day 7. It could have just been my milk coming in, but I also noted a difference on days when I would and would not drink it. On days when I had tea I had so much milk I could have fed 3 kids. I don’t really need it now, with mature milk the babe gets her fill. I would definitely recommend it.
I appreciate your reviews everyone! Very helpful!
thought it was gross … but my husband’s nieces liked it ….
i tried it. You have to drink about 8 cups a day or something to be effective. I used Brestea. (breastea.com i believe) It worked a lot better got my supply and with a bit of honey it was great to drink. We have been nursing for 18 months now. I had a hard struggle at first and that really helped!
I would not recommend Mothers Milk tea, It is expensive to be effective and it does not taste good.
Thanks for the reviews Dianna and Jennifer. It’s good to know there are other options out there, too.
I actually enjoy the taste:p I keep several packets at my desk at work and I’ve purchased several boxes for home. Even though the directions say 3 cups a day, if I have only one cup for the day I’ll see a difference in the amount of milk I pump. I can pump upwards of 2-3 extra ozs for the day when I drink the tea. It works great for me especially now that my 3 month old wants to drink 6 ozs now at every feeding!
