Works of art related to breastfeeding are being sought for a juried “Art of Breastfeeding” show put on by the Lincoln County Breastfeeding Coalition and the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts. In an article in the Newport News Times, Pat Lewis of the Lincoln County Breastfeeding Coalition says:
“There are lots of images out there of formula feeding; it’s so common it doesn’t even register with people,” Lewis says. “But there are no images of breastfeeding in the public venue … the images may be out there, but we don’t see them. It’s not in the social psyche.” …
The show is open to all artists, and original two- or three-dimensional works in all media will be accepted. Lewis says, “Artists are encouraged to consider the theme broadly, whimsically and seriously.”
The show will run at the Lincoln City Cultural Center and the Visual Arts Center in Newport from August 3-30 in celebration of World Breastfeeding Week and Breastfeeding Success Month in Lincoln County.
It costs $5 to submit an entry and submissions must be received by 4 p.m. on June 14, 2007. The juried show offers prizes of $200 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third and a People’s Choice award will be given at the end of the display.
Perhaps artist Birgit will enter!

I am interested in using an image of breastfeeding art by a local Oregon artist (particularly Portland region) for a college assignment where I am presenting an idea for a breastfeeding lounge, which happens to be located in Portland. I am wondering if you had ever found any leads on such art (per your blog from 2007)… meanwhile, I am contacting the artist Brigit you mentioned. I am not sure if she is from Oregon or not, but any breastfeeding art is better than none (it’s only a college assignment after all, my final project for the semester).
Thank you so much,
Tiffany “Nurses In Public” Deering
Hi Tiffany,
I was not affiliated with that art show so I don’t know anything about the artists. You could try contacting the sponsors of the show or try to find a news article about the winners of the show. Good luck!
