Early Initiation of Breastfeeding through Breast Crawl

My friend Sandy pointed me to this professional video put together by UNICEF Maharashtra on the recommendation by UNICEF, WHO and WABA that breastfeeding be initiated within the first half hour after birth. The video demonstrates how a newborn baby, when placed on the mother’s chest, will use a breast crawl to self-initiate breastfeeding within 30-60 minutes. In this particular case, you can watch as it takes the newborn just 10 minutes to locate the nipple and latch on with a perfect latch. It’s powerful evidence of a baby’s instincts, the importance of skin-to-skin contact, and the benefits of early initiation of breastfeeding. I’ve put the video behind the “read more” cut because the initial image does show the mother’s bare breast, and I didn’t want that image shown inappropriately (I actually think the whole scene is beautiful, but I’m not sure readers would appreciate this shot magically showing up on the screen at work, say!)

Ive got tears in my eyes.
Absolutely amazing.
It truly is amazing. I had no idea newborns were so strong and capable!
Its really amazing….unbelievable…We should learn from animals. It should be widely publicised especially amongst obsttricians and that too seniors…who do not believe in new things
It’s unreal. I saw another video like this one (delivery: self attachment) and I never felt more inspired in my life.
this was awesome….its pretty amazing how its part of a newborn’s instinct
Is there any way I can get a copy of the video. I like to present it to our staff when I give inservice. this is really amazing incredibly awesome!

Is it possible to get a copy of this video?
Hi Janet, I do not know whether the video is available in hard copy. Here is a link that should help you contact the creator of the video, UNICEF Maharashtra:
