My baby was like yours though -- alert and ready to nurse! My baby was definately not sleepy. He was alert and looking around and crying (loudly). I have 1 child and I would like to have an epidural for the next one. I only wish I had gotten it sooner for this one. I don't see the reason to endure the pain. My labor was not long (8 hrs) and I had no complications. I had an epidural and I had no problems breastfeeding right away. My baby was definately not sleepy. He was alert and looking around and crying (loudly).
