In response to JulieF the Mom who breastfed 4 children: Great Job!! As you know "Breastfeeding is Best" for your baby and it is wonderful that you have given them this great start by nursing. There are so many women that don't realize the benefits and have not received any education about breastfeeding; whether they are low income or not. I am a breastfeeding counselor and I do work with lower income Mom's. Did you have support within your family Julie when it came to nursing your babies? Do you have any sisters or Mom that breastfed? Having support and encouragement is so important! That's why this blog is so helpful with all this great information. Sharon

I am a low income mom of (soon to be)5 children. I have breastfed each one! I hate to say it, but many other very low income women that I know are not well educated and seem to think that breastfeeding is 'perverted'. It is very sad.

I am not saying that is all low income women, just quite a few that I have met. Lack of education leads to the idea that formula is somehow superior.

I have only needed to put one of my children onto formula because she was never able to latch one properrly, even after 4 months. I did not have the resources at the time to buy a pump, nor did I know how to hand express properly. These days, I know more and have even been a counselor!

I think your point about how it is free to breastfeed is so important. I work in a boutique and have personally spent hundreds of dollars on breastfeeding "stuff," but, particularly for a mom who doesn't work, none of that is necessary. AND, even if you add up all of what I spent, I've STILL saved if you consider what I would have had to spend on formula.

Thanks for this great post! I wrote one a few weeks ago that would have been a good fit for Blog Action Day, but I'll be writing about the Empathy Deficit instead today.

Here is my post on Lactivism and the Homelessness Problem: http://phdinparenting.wordpress.com/2008/09/19/lactivism-and-the-homelessness-problem/

Good and informative post. I finally got one written this morning myself. The inverse relationship between income and breastfeeding rates stunned me when I first read about it. Even if you don't breastfeed for the health benefits, surely you would for the financial benefits, I thought. Of course the actual reasons are more complex but my immediate reactions tend not to be well-reasoned. ;+)
