Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher recently signed a bill that exempts nursing mothers from jury duty in Kentucky. Senate Bill 111, sponsored by Senator Tom Buford, passed unanimously in both the state Senate and House. The new law amends Kentucky Revised Statutes 29A.100 to add the following provision:
(4) The judge shall excuse a mother who is breastfeeding a child or expressing breastmilk from jury service until such time as the child is old enough that the mother is no longer breastfeeding the child.
Similar bills are pending in Maine, Michigan and New Mexico. For other recent legislative news regarding breastfeeding, click here. To find news regarding a particular state, type in the name of the state in the “Search” feature in the upper right corner of this page.
