Approximately 30 people braved the cold to protest outside the Asheville, North Carolina, Denny’s where Crystal Everitt was asked to cover up while breastfeeding her son. Another handful of protesters met outside a Hanover, Pennsylvania Denny’s. The media coverage consists of:
Newspaper article:
Asheville Citizen-Times: Nursing Mom Leads Protest
Television news:
Pennsylvania: WFMZ-TV covers the Hanover Township, Lehigh County nurse-in (great job speaking to the media, mama!!)
First-hand blog account of the nurse-in:
Jenny Harmon at Mothering without a Manual
Video of Corporate Statement:
You can watch the rather insincere and unsatisfactory statement of Rick Pate, representative for Success Management, which runs several Denny’s including the Asheville location:
Did you attend a nurse-in? Leave a comment to share how it went! Also, feel free to link to any other news accounts as they come in.

I attended the Asheville, NC nurse-in with my sister who is currently breastfeeding my 1-year old nephew. There are a lot of posts online that accuse Crystal of being a crazy, attention-seeking flasher. It’s ridiculous. After meeting her and speaking with her personally I found her to be a courageous, articulate mother who just wants to feed her son when he gets hungry with no hassel. Rick Pate’s stance is that Denny’s provides an “offensive-free family environment.” Shame on him for supporting customers and managers who are offended by a breastfeeding mother. Complaining customers should have been moved to a table where they didn’t have to look at Crystal if they were that bothered by it and it should have been left at that. And shame on the APD officer who responded to the call for not defending this mother’s LEGAL right to feed her child ANYWHERE.
Everyone should avoid Denny’s because they offer overpriced, low quality food, poor service in a lousy atmosphere. The fact that they discriminate and break the law only adds to the justification.
