Breastfeeding 1-2-3

Mom to Mom Questions and Breastfeeding Support

As part of a regular series at Breastfeeding123, the blog will feature reader questions. I’ll post the reader’s question, offer a bit of information and support in response, and invite comments from other readers. It’s an opportunity for moms to support other moms in a virtual breastfeeding support forum. If you want to skip the rules and admonitions to BE NICE, you can dive right in to Mom to Mom #1

If you have a question or particular topic you’d like to see discussed, please email me! By submitting a question or idea, you grant permission for that question to be published on the blog. If you wish to remain anonymous, please specify that in your email. Otherwise you may ask me to include any combination of your first name or pseudonym and/or link to your blog or webpage. As space and time allow, appropriate questions will be posted as part of the Mom to Mom series. Keep in mind that I am not a medical expert and cannot provide medical advice. Medical-related questions may still be submitted, and I will do my best provide resources to pursue and tips for talking with medical professionals about breastfeeding. Perhaps other mothers will be able to share their experiences with a particular medical issue.

When responding with a comment to a reader’s question, keep in mind the following: the whole goal is to help the mother be happy with her breastfeeding experience. It (almost) goes without saying that it’s better to offer constructive support than demeaning criticism. If you don’t agree with what the mother proposes (and that’s bound to come up with certain hot topics), it’s not helpful to say, “Are you crazy? You can’t do that.” It IS helpful to say, “Have you considered…” “Some mothers have found…” “In my experience…” Praise the good: “I can see you’ve put a lot of thought into this.” “Congratulations on your breastfeeding success to date!” Keep it nice and the mother is more likely to “hear” what you have to say.

With that in mind, let’s get the Mom to Mom series off to a good start by talking about Tips for Getting Breastfeeding off to a Good Start.
