Breastfeeding 1-2-3

Nursing Room Locator

Last week I wrote about how to get a distractible baby to nurse in public. This week I happened upon a new resource for mothers looking for a quiet place to nurse–the Nursing Room Locator. I completely agree with the site’s creator:

I firmly believe that every mother has the right to nurse her child wherever she sees fit, be it a bench in the mall or at the coffee shop down the street. That said, sometimes you just want a quiet place to feed your baby. Maybe you’re newly postpartum and still working on the mechanics of nursing. Maybe you have a distractible six-month-old who pops off at the slightest noise. Maybe you just prefer to nurse in private. For times like these, a nursing room is a wonderful place.

Nursing room locations are listed by state and province. The site is in the developing stages, and that’s where we come in. If you agree that the Nursing Room Locator is a good idea, pass on the link and submit one or two locations in your hometown. I like how the site also lists locations by store name. Not only does that help mothers locate a nursing room, it also recognizes and rewards stores that are breastfeeding-friendly.

I strongly think that wal mart needs nursing rooms. They can afford to have hair salons and banks in there, why not a prive room where breastfeeding mother can feel secure to nurse their babies without stares and rude comments.

I was pleased to find out that my future employer, United Health Group in San Antonio, TX, has a Nursing Room for mother’s to pump in! KUDOS UNITED HEALTH GROUP!

  1. [...] A new Oklahoma statute goes into effect today, but unlike the previous two laws, this one is essentially symbolic. It encourages but does not require employers to provide working mothers with unpaid break time to breastfeed or pump. It also encourages employers to provide a private, secure, and sanitary room other than a toilet stall for mothers to breastfeed or pump. While the law has no “bite” I’m still pleased to see nursing rooms mentioned in state legislation. Every bit of progress counts. [...]
