Breastfeeding Speed Links for December 18, 2007

~ The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program encourages breastfeeding through the offer of pumping supplies, support from breastfeeding peer counselors, and incentives to breastfeed (breastfeeding mothers who do not require infant formula are given extra allotments of food). Tanya at the Motherwear Breastfeeding Blog reports that WIC is in danger of having to cut over half a million families due to a potential lack of funding.
~ Author Sean Taylor refused to accept the prize money for the Nestlé Children’s Book Prize 2007 after he learned about Nestlé’s unethical marketing practices. Thanks to Bliss-Breastfeeding for the heads-up on that …read more

Before I could read Baby Matters, Revised 2nd Edition: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Caring for Your Baby, two breastfeeding women raved to me about the book. “Most doctors just tell you what they believe about baby care. This updated list reveals the top breastfeeding book sales through Breastfeeding 1-2-3 over the last year.
1. The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers: Gentle Ways to Stop Bedtime Battles and Improve Your Child’s Sleep by Elizabeth Pantley. This is by far the number one best seller for Breastfeeding 1-2-3 readers. That pleases me very much given my feelings against crying-it-out.
The next three books tied for second place.
2. The Nursing Mother’s Companion: Revised Edition by Kathleen Huggins. You can read my interview with Kathleen Huggins here.
3. Mothering Your Nursing Toddler by Norma Jane Bumgarner.

Author Andi Silverman on Breastfeeding

Earlier this week I reviewed Andi Silverman’s new book Mama Knows Breast: A Beginner’s Guide to Breastfeeding. Today Andi answers questions about her own experience with breastfeeding and the process of writing her book.
Did you have any difficulties breastfeeding?

Even though I had some parenting books and had taken a breastfeeding class, I often felt at a …read more

Vaccinations and the Breastfeeding Family: A Poll

Vaccinations and the Breastfeeding Family: A Poll

I was really happy to hear that there’s a new book coming out this fall on the question of whether or not to have your child vaccinated. Vaccination is a hot topic among my breastfeeding friends, with some women opting to have their children fully vaccinated and some women opting to decline vaccinations altogether. Robert W. Sears, MD, FAAP wrote The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child to inform parents about the pros and cons of different vaccines. The publisher describes the book as follows:
Each chapter will be devoted to a disease/vaccine pair and offer a comprehensive …read more
