Breastfeeding Photos: A Poll

In light of the controversies about breastfeeding photos on Facebook, MySpace and LiveJournal, I am wondering how you feel about the appropriateness of having breastfeeding pictures taken of you and your nursling. Do you have them taken?

If you have had breastfeeding photos taken, what do you do with them? Have you shared them with friends, posted them on a blog, or used them for avatars on web sites? Is there an age of the nursling after which breastfeeding photos are no longer appropriate? What about this news story (via Blacktating) that tells how a family’s children were taken away by child protective services when the photo development service saw pictures of the baby nursing?

How Has Breastfeeding Affected Your Sex Life? A Poll

The reaction to this “Bond with your baby. Bond with your man” poster was strong and the comments section developed an interesting discussion. I would like to open the question up to everyone — how has breastfeeding affected your sex life? Does your partner enjoy your new bustline, and/or has breastfeeding left you “touched out” at the end of the day? Do you feel the breastfeeding hormones have affected you in any way? Or are you simply too tired as a new parent to make this anything but a moot question?

Have You Ever Tasted Breast Milk? A Poll

Many of us tasted breast milk as infants of course, but have you ever tasted it as an adult? Maybe you were curious like Friends on television, illustrating a point like this professor, using it to treat cancer, or you have a breast milk fetish.

Poll Results: Nursing in Public

Nearly 200 voters expressed their opinions on the age, if any, that breastfeeding in public becomes in appropriate. I was glad to see that 35% of voters felt that nursing in public is always appropriate. I was surprised to see 6% of voters say it’s never appropriate. The overall breakdown:

Breastfeeding in Public Appropriate at What Ages? A Poll

As we approach Breastfeeding Awareness Month this coming August, my thoughts return to the issue of nursing in public. Polls in the past have touched on various aspects of this issue. You can see voters’ thoughts on nursing in public in general, using a nursing cover, and carrying a copy of the state breastfeeding laws regarding nursing in public. What I want to know now is your answer to the harder question of whether there is ever a time when breastfeeding in public becomes in appropriate. Does the age of the nursling matter? Are you comfortable with seeing someone nurse a six-month-old in public but not a one-year-old? What about a two-year-old, three-year-old, or four-year-old?

Feel free to leave a comment as well. Do you object to nursing a two-year-old in public simply because you do not think two-year-olds should be nursing? Does your answer to the poll depend on whether the nursling has good nursing manners (i.e. sits still and does not pull up the woman’s shirt)? Are you fine with nursing your own three-year-old but think it should always be done in private because you think nursing an older child in public sets back “the cause” of nursing in public somehow? Did you stop nursing in public when your nursling turned four because you thought others might say something harmful to your child about it?

While you all had clear favorites in Camille and Rebecca, discussions continue between my husband and me, and we are not that much closer to figuring out the name. Tick tock, tick tock . . . .

Poll Results: Breastfed Infants Sleeping in Cribs or Co-Sleeping

No poll results have surprised me more than these. I understand that the pool of readers who actually answer the polls here (only a very small fraction of people who visit the blog — I hope more of you vote in the latest poll to help me name my baby!) might be quite skewed, but I still was shocked to find that nearly 2/3 of voters co-sleep with their breastfed infants under age 12 months. With all the bad press and debate about the safety of co-sleeping, I didn’t realize how many families find that co-sleeping works for them!

Birth Choices and Breastfeeding: A Poll

I am not even 20 weeks along in this pregnancy and already I am focused on the birth. After two unsatisfying hospital births, this time I am working with a midwife toward a home birth. I am curious about your thoughts on birth choices and whether or not they affect breastfeeding success rates. Do you think birth center and home births are more conducive to breastfeeding success? Do breastfeeding women tend to choose birth center or home births even if they gave birth at a hospital the first time? How successful do you think hospital lactation support is?
