In this video, registered nurses and lactation consultants Corky Harvey and Wendy Haldeman offer advice and reassurance about breastfeeding in public. These women project the right attitude (in my opinion) about nursing in public — anywhere (except the public restroom), anytime, with confidence. I especially love their answer to the question: “How do I deal with curious kids when nursing in public?” The one tip I would add about nursing a distractible baby in public is to use a sling!

Think hand expression is unnecessary or too difficult? Dr. Jane Morton offers a free video that demonstrates how to teach mothers (or how to learn for oneself) the technique for hand expression of breast milk. When I interviewed Dr. Morton last March, she mentioned new research that suggests that hand expression used in conjunction with pumping in the first three days is much more effective in promoting subsequent milk production than pumping alone. This question came up recently when one of my friends had an emergency appendectomy. Personally I have used this question as a way to weed out (bad) doctors — unless they give me the correct answer or say “I don’t know, but I’ll find out for you,” they’re history. 2. Toys “R” Us nurse-in, September 21, 2006, in Times Square in New York City.
3. Delta Airlines nurse-in, November 21, 2006, with nearly 900 activists at 40 airports across the United States.
