Free Video: Tips for Breastfeeding in Public

In this video, registered nurses and lactation consultants Corky Harvey and Wendy Haldeman offer advice and reassurance about breastfeeding in public. These women project the right attitude (in my opinion) about nursing in public — anywhere (except the public restroom), anytime, with confidence. I especially love their answer to the question: “How do I deal with curious kids when nursing in public?” The one tip I would add about nursing a distractible baby in public is to use a sling!

Free Video on Hand Expression of Breast Milk

Think hand expression is unnecessary or too difficult? Dr. Jane Morton offers a free video that demonstrates how to teach mothers (or how to learn for oneself) the technique for hand expression of breast milk. When I interviewed Dr. Morton last March, she mentioned new research that suggests that hand expression used in conjunction with pumping in the first three days is much more effective in promoting subsequent milk production than pumping alone. She said if women were taught to hand express in the first three days after giving birth, their milk production could be boosted significantly and fewer women would experience problems (or unnecessary worries) over low milk supply. In the video, Dr. Morton explains that mothers separated from their babies have been shown to produce 80% more milk by using hand expression more than five times each day in the first three days in addition to using the electric pump!

Dr. Morton is Director of Breastfeeding Medicine at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) and a Clinical Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. Along with other breastfeeding resources, she offers the seven-minute 33-second video in free streaming video format at LPCH’s Newborn Nursery site, or copies may be purchased through the email address mentioned on that page. Note that it takes a fast internet connection and a little patience to see the entire video. When the video froze occasionally, I needed to manually advance and rewind through those sections to see the entire thing. It’s worth it though!

Does General Anesthesia Affect Breastfeeding?

This question came up recently when one of my friends had an emergency appendectomy. Personally I have used this question as a way to weed out (bad) doctors — unless they give me the correct answer or say “I don’t know, but I’ll find out for you,” they’re history. For the expert answer to whether general anesthesia affects breastfeeding, watch this 24-second video clip.

Billy Dean’s Song “Let Them Be Little” Becomes Breastfeeding Favorite

The country music song Let Them Be Little has become a favorite of breastfeeding advocates after Grammy-award winning singer Billy Dean sang his song at the LLLI Conference in July. Here’s a video set to the song — it’s a photo montage from La Leche League of Marion County’s World Breastfeeding Week celebration in Ocala, Florida on August 3, 2007 [Edited to add: For some reason, that video is no longer available! I've put in another one that has nothing to do with breastfeeding but is a lovely video of three darling kids including two of the cutest twins]. You might want to have some tissues ready, especially for these lyrics:

Video Montage of Photos from Several Nurse-Ins across America

Lactivist Janice Reynolds prepared a video compilation of pictures from three major nurse-ins over the last two years:

1. The View nurse-in, June 6, 2005, with over 300 attendees in New York City and five other cities.

2. Toys “R” Us nurse-in, September 21, 2006, in Times Square in New York City.

3. Delta Airlines nurse-in, November 21, 2006, with nearly 900 activists at 40 airports across the United States.

Reynolds says:

Mothers in North America are increasingly taking to holding “Nurse-Ins” to uphold their right to breastfeed anytime, anywhere, in order to feed and nurture their children. Organized primarily through Internet networks, it is a mother’s show of solidarity and community with each other, at this time in our culture when this simple act of nurturing our children can bring dirty looks, nasty comments or even cause the mother and child to be removed from businesses or airplanes.
