~ New this year is the La Leche League of Central Lake County, IL 2010 breastfeeding calendar! You can preview the pictures at the site and order through PayPal. Each calendar is sold for $15.00, including tax and shipping. Proceeds from the sale of the calendar will help fund breastfeeding education and support for the mothers and children of Central Lake County, Illinois.

~ Also new this year is the 2010 Calendar from the Rugby Breastfeeding Cafe in the UK. You can watch a slide show of the pictures, then order the calendar for £10 plus shipping. It’s available both in and outside the UK.

~ The New Mexico Breastfeeding Task Force held a contest for pictures for its 2010 Breastfeeding Calendar. Watch the task force home page for announcement of the 2010 release. The 2009 version is still for sale.

Pumping for an extended length of time (such as after returning to work) is a commitment and I can certainly see why Editor B would want to document the result of her efforts!

Me and my 14-month-old

I hadn’t heard the oven timer beep so it was a good thing my little sous chef alerted me before the muffins burned. There was no more sleeping after that, but my baby had had a good nap, my preschooler and I had had fun baking, and we all enjoyed a yummy snack!

I think it’s lovely how breastfeeding helps a family get out into the fresh air together. I often hear women say “I can’t do [X] because I’m breastfeeding” (whether that’s true or not) and so I think it’s really important to highlight what mothers can do (or at least can do more easily) because they are breastfeeding!

What a darling little flower girl! I suspect that toddler nursing break was just the thing she needed to re-charge and re-connect during the excitement of the wedding and reception! Her mother looked gorgeous too and I think it’s great she didn’t have to retreat to another room to hike up a dress in order to nurse.

Book Review

The sturdy 5″ x 6″ board book features 12 gorgeous images on six (front and back) pages. The pictures include nurslings ranging from a 4-day-old newborn (make me cry will you?!) to a 3-year-old toddler. The pictures stand alone without captions or other text.

I was curious to see how my children would like the book. My 7-year-old, too old for board books in general, was completely unfazed by the book. She thinks it’s perfectly normal to see images of breastfeeding mothers and babies. My 4-year-old was enchanted. “Ooh, a book about mamas and babies!” (note how the fact that the mamas and babies are breastfeeding is completely secondary!) She later picked the book up again on her own and started making up a story for it. “Breastfeeding is good. If you want to breastfeed, here is how you do it.” Yes!

My 1-year-old gave the book the true test. She liked the pictures of the babies, and being a baby herself, she liked trying to gnaw off the corners of the book! It’s a well-made, sturdy board book that stood up to her playing with it.
