Alton Brown’s Chocolate Waffles

chocwaffles.jpg

I made some of Alton Brown’s chocolate waffles on Saturday for the kids. I’m not sure what I did wrong but the batter ended up way too runny and the first waffle I tried squeezed right out of the iron. I added some more flour which thickened it up to where it looked like his batter on his waffle episode (which had been on the day or so before). They cooked up fine after that but it bugs me that I may have messed up somewhere – I even weighed everything out like he says to!

They weren’t very chocolatey, either. In fact, the only parts that tasted like more than a regular waffles were the chocolate chips, though it was better with some syrup. Alton has never failed me before so I may give them one more shot, and if it ends up the same way I’ll stick with my regular plain waffles with chocolate chips!

I love Alton Brown….and I love waffles, and chocolate…but I too have tried this recipe and was not impressed. I think a better use of waffles in a dessert would be to make regular crisp Belgian waffles, and then top with ice cream and chocolate sauce while the waffle is still hot.

Hi Liz! I’m so glad it wasn’t just me that it didn’t work for. Your ice cream idea sounds divine!

My wife has made AB’s chocolate waffle recipe on several occasions, and they always turn out perfect. I’m not sure what you guys have done wrong, but done right, these things are amazing.

I have made them and they turned out great! I don’t know what the secret is to that though :) I love them with peanut butter and whipped cream!
