Chocolate Monkey Cake

My twins’ birthday was this past weekend, and one of them absolutely loves monkeys. I was going to surprise her with the cake I found for her this year, but realized it would probably be more special and fun for her if she got to help me with it!

My friend Sherry sent me the link to this decorated cake several months ago, and I printed it out immediately and have had it stashed in my recipe folder since. I’ve been so excited to try it out but couldn’t really do a test run because that obviously would have given it away!
Luckily it was easy enough that I didn’t need one, and the cake turned out perfectly. My daughter decided she didn’t want the licorice hair sticking out the top (which was good because I couldn’t find chocolate Twizzlers anywhere), but other than that it turned out exactly as it should. She loved helping out with making the actual cake, and then with the sprinkles and smile.

My other twin had fun decorating her cake as well even though it wasn’t as involved as the monkey cake. She chose a strawberry cake with chocolate frosting, and fresh cut strawberries on top. She got to do the frosting, the strawberries and the gel. The strawberries were still a bit wet when we place them on the frosting so they slid a bit, but that didn’t affect the taste!
She adores our cupcake cake pan and was excited that it was finally her turn to get to use it (her older sister had a giant cupcake for her birthday last November).

They both turned out great!
My son wants a strawberry cake for his birthday. I’ve never made strawberry before. DId you use a box mix or make it from scratch?
Sherry – thanks!!
Hi Patti! I ended up just using a box cake mix (Pillsbury, I think).
What a sweet monkey cake! I will put this one if my file for a special day too!
What a cute cake!
I just love this monkey. I think it reminds me of the teddy bear cake my mom used to always make for my little brothers birthday. That’s great that you let you daughters help out in the kitchen. They’ll remember that much more then if you had saved everything for a surprise. Happy baking and blogging.
What a GREAT monkey- I’d love that cake for my next birthday and I’ll be 26. If only the husband could bake…
How great that your kids got to help with their cakes. They did a great job – both cakes turned out awesome.
Oh wow, that is just precious and beautifully done beyond words, not to mention delicious looking! Kudos on the ultimate cake for a kid’s (or adult’s) birthday or any celebration!
wow! and yum!
My son’s half birthday is coming up in a couple of days, and this will definitely top the polar bear cake I made him in December for the real thing. Thanks for the link!
