This is my grandmother's recipe (and I am 50 years old) that has been around prior to her time, and it may help you in your quest for the recipe for a drier/chocolaty Grandpa's Rocky Road Fudge. It's a dry fudge recipe. I am going to alter it and add the frozen marshmallows (1 1/2 cups as you mentioned) after stirring the fudge for a bit and see what happens.

5 1/2 cups sugar
1 can milk
2 sticks of butter
1 1/2 bags mini marshmallows
*1 1/2 cups frozen marshmallows added after stirring fudge mix if making rocky road fudge
1 1/2 bags semi sweet chocolate chips
1 Tablespoon vanilla
2 cups walnuts

In a large, heavy pan bring sugar/canned milk/butter to a rolling boil; once rolling cook for 9 minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat add the mini marshmallows (not the frozen ones yet), chocolate chips, vanilla, nuts. Stir, stir and stir some more until everything is completely mixed (approx. 5 - 10 solid minutes of stirring). If making Rocky Road Fudge, then stir in frozen marshmallows.
Then follow "Grandpa's Rocky Road Fudge" recipe for lining pans, etc...

Hope this helps!

I have been on a quest to find a recipe for fudge that doesn't use marshmallow creme or sweetened condensed milk.

So I will definitely be trying this one!
