Grasshopper Pie

I’m not sure how grasshopper pie got its name — I’m sure the green has something to do with it, obviously — but why name something so yummy after a bug? Anyway, grasshopper pie couldn’t be easier to make to make at home with just a few simple ingredients, and the kids will have a blast helping out.

You’ll need one chocolate crumb pie crust, four cups of mint chocolate chip ice cream, and about twelve chopped Oreo cookies.
Let the ice cream sit out just long enough to become soft, and then scoop into the pie crust and smooth over. Add the chopped Oreos on top. If you’ve got an especially strong sweet tooth, you can add some chopped chocolate-covered peppermint patties to the top too.
Store in the freezer and let sit on the counter for about ten minutes before serving, otherwise it’s a pain to try and cut!

You’re probably too young to remember the “old days” when ordering cocktails was the only thing when you went out for an evening. No wine (except by the bottle) and lots of restaurants didn’t serve beer – beer was reserved only for bars. So the bartenders really did bar-tend. The grasshopper is a drink made with creme de menthe (hence the green/grasshopper) and creme de cocoa with some heavy cream. In some places ice cream is substituted for the cream. People drank them before a meal, or if they went to a nightclub to dance, etc., and since many women didn’t drink highballs, etc., they’d order grasshoppers. Probably just as much alcohol, but it was sweet. I used to order a brandy alexander (brandy, creme de cocoa and ice cream) because I didn’t drink beer and didn’t know yet about wine, which was only available by the bottle anyway. Now I drink wine, happily.
Hi Carolyn! I had totally forgotten about the grasshopper cocktail. I’m a fan of creme de menthe and -cocoa so I have no excuse! And I’m with you, though I don’t drink wine (haven’t acquired a taste for it yet, though I’ve tried!) I do prefer a cocktail to beer.
