Another trip down the candy aisle at Sam’s Club recently turned up this large bag of Limited Edition Neapolitan Hershey Kisses. I love neapolitan ice cream so I had high hopes for these!

The bag I found is 24 oz and I picked it up for about $7. Each candy is wrapped in the standard Kisses foil, and like all the other Limited Editions these have their own special design of silver, brown and fuchsia with a little flag that says “Neapolitan.”

Neapolitan consists of three layers containing chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. Hershey’s pulled this off with chocolate on the bottom, a larger strawberry layer in the middle, and a small vanilla tip.

At room temperature these had a waxy mouth feel and even after being in the fridge for a bit to firm up they just kind of coat your mouth. Strawberry is definitely the dominant flavor — even upon just opening the bag it’s all you smell. The chocolate and vanilla are totally lost to the point that you wonder if they’re strawberry flavored too and just colored for the sake of being able to be called Neapolitan Kisses and not straight-up Strawberry Kisses.

Overall I wasn’t terribly impressed with this limited edition release, and the kids weren’t either which is saying something!

I found a pack of Hershey’s Kisses Chocolate Truffles at the store checkout the other day. Each pack is 1.3 ounces and has five truffles inside.

They’re packed into a triangular cardboard tube inside the foil wrapper.

These are slightly bigger than a regular Kiss and a bit of a broader base to accommodate the truffle filling.

I don’t know why I was expecting more than what I got, taste-wise. I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Kisses though I know they’re far from good chocolate. Maybe the “truffle” in the name made me think it’d be a little more decadent and a little more rich than a regular Kiss. Which they really weren’t. The middle was a bit creamier but the overall taste comes from the regular outer chocolate which is plain old waxy Hershey’s. Save your money!

When I got the toffee Kisses I also found a bag of Limited Edition New York Cheesecake Kisses! Of course they found their way into my cart as well. The 38.5oz bag was also around the $5 mark.

Their foil wrappers were a little more sophisticated with a pinstripe pattern, and of the course the paper flag indicates you are about to eat a cheesecake kiss.

The milk chocolate on these was much smoother and glossier than the toffee kisses, which looked a little beat up.

The tangy center had a pretty good portion of creamy cheesecake compared to the amount of chocolate, but I think it might have been too much. Though pleasant and tasty, they’re a little too sweet for me. I think a bigger cheesecake fan would appreciate these more than I did, but I’m not complaining!

I’ve had several of the limited edition Hershey Kisses over the last few years, but these are my favorite so far. They came in a 30 ounce bag for about $4.99 (I can’t find the receipt – sorry!).

As with all the limited edition Kisses, the foil is uniquely patterned and the little paper flag lets you know what you’re about to unwrap.

The kisses look a little beat up right out of the wrapper, though I’m not sure why. Toffee bit exposure, maybe?

There are tiny bits of toffee inside which provide a pleasant little crunch. The taste is buttery and light and blends very well with the milk chocolate. Definitely my new favorite Kiss!

Have you tried them? What did you think?

I don’t normally shoot everything I make but sometimes there’s a rush of “it turned out!” and I feel the need to record it for posterity. This was actually one of those times but I didn’t feel like waiting for the camera battery to charge and the family was already set to dig in, so I had to let it go (the picture below is not mine). Anyway, this comes from one of my favorite Food TV cooks, Paula Deen:

Chocolate Bundles with Chocolate Sauce

Bundles:
1 sheet puff pastry
2 eggs
1 teaspoon whipping cream
8 chocolate kisses
8 miniature chocolate candy bars

Chocolate Sauce:
1/2 cup heavy cream
4 ounces milk chocolate, broken into small pieces
Sweetened whipped cream, optional
Fresh strawberries, sliced, for garnish

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper

To make the bundles, allow the puff pastry to thaw, covered, for 30 minutes at room temperature. When it is pliable, unfold puff pastry and cut the sheet into 4 (4 by 4-inch squares).

Beat the eggs and cream together to create an egg wash. Brush the entire surface of each pastry square with egg wash. In the center of each pastry square, place 2 chocolate kisses and 2 mini candy bars. Pull the corners of each square up around the chocolate, and twist the top of the dough clockwise to complete the “bundle.” Brush the exteriors of the chocolate bundles with more egg wash. Place the bundles on the cookie sheet. Bake for about 35 minutes, until golden brown.

To make the chocolate sauce: in a small saucepan bring the heavy cream to a boil. Place the chocolate pieces in a bowl and pour hot cream over the top. Whisk until the sauce is smooth.

Puddle the chocolate sauce on a plate and place a bundle on top. Top with whipped cream and additional chocolate sauce, if desired. Serve the bundles garnished with strawberry slices.

It only makes four so if you need more make sure you adjust accordingly!
