New on DVD is the unforgettable movie The Chocolate War. This movie really does have something to do with chocolate, but the underlying theme has to do with the darker side of high school.
In this movie, starring John Glover and Ilan Mitchell-Smith, a new student to a Catholic private school is expected to sell chocolates as a fundraiser. But it turns into much more. There is a school “gang” who terrorize the student, as well as pressures from the teaching staff, and the issues of corruption and blackmail and authority are highlighted throughout.
The movie is based on the book of the same name by Robert Cormier. The movie follows the plot of the book fairly closely until the end, which in many opinions is a better ending than in the book. This is one of those stories that will stay with you forever, and is highly recommended.
