I have been sent a Diamond Edge Gourmet Electric Knife & Scissor Sharpener by Smith’s Edge to try out and tell you about.  In addition, the good folks at Smith’s are going to provide a giveaway sharpener to one lucky reader!!

***FREE STUFF ALERT***FREE STUFF ALERT***

For a high grade professional quality sharpener, this machine is extremely easy to use.  I am very happy with the manual 2 Step Sharpener that I already use, so I wasn’t very excited about what I supposed was going to be a complicated machine.  Not so.  It has a manual honing station and an electric sharpening station, both of which are super simple to figure out.  On the side is a manual scissor sharpening station, and beneath the machine is a small drawer which collects the filings for easy cleanup.

Most of the time, knives can be put to rights by honing, which uncurls the bent edge, but from time to time real sharpening is required to restore them.  I think we all know that dull knives are actually more dangerous than properly sharpened ones, so here’s a way to up the safety of your kitchen.

If you’d like a chance to win this fabulous machine, simply leave me a comment below, telling me your favorite brand and style of knife.  My fave is my Forschner’s 8 inch chef’s knife.  How about you?  Leave you comment by next Monday evening, and I’ll randomly select a winner!

Note: for the difference between honing and sharpening, check out my post on the topic.

For general use, I have an ancient Chicago Cutlery blade that works well.
For fine work I have a carbon steel Japanese knife that nobody else is allowed to touch due to the origional price. For doing sushi, I have a teflon coated blade that makes life easier. And I always carry a gerber pocket knife for general use. Two more handy knives that I carry all the time are the focus of this article:
