Gifts for Travelers: Crossword Puzzles

NY Times crossword puzzle A few years ago I started a subscription to the NY Times (Sunday only) so that I could get the Sunday crossword puzzle the week before my local paper ran it.

I love a lazy Sunday morning, sleepy in, a toasty fire, a cup of coffee, some nice music in the background and the NY Times crossword puzzle.  In the summer, I head out to the deck with my coffee and watch as a summer morning turned the day warm while I tried to fill in every single one of those blank little boxes.  And for the record, I do mine in ink.

Crossword puzzles are a great gift for a traveler.  If printed on paper and bound into books, you can tear out a couple of pages and throw them in your carryon, and then have something to do on the plane, train, bus, on a car trip, or while sitting around eating your lunch.  Crossword books can be found at any bookstore and cover a wide price range.

NY Times electronic crossword And since I’m partial to crosswords of the NY Times variety, I thought this electric version was pretty cool.  It contains 1,000 puzzles, with a memory feature that lets you start and stop at your convenience — like stopping when it’s time to turn off all your electronics on your flight.  The electronic version can be found at local gadget stores and costs about $70.

  1. Matt B says:

I love all kinds of word puzzles, including crosswords, word searches, cryptograms, etc. You’re right, they definitely make for great time-spenders, and they don’t require much space or batteries (except for the electronic one, of course).

  2. And researchers say that doing crosswords helps to keep Alzheimers at bay as well.
