Gifts for Travelers: Pen & Ink

Italian Leather Wrap Journal Despite our love for electronics and gadgets, there are times that nothing meets our needs like paper products.  Beautiful, rich writing paper that feels so good to the touch.  And a quality ink product that feels good in the hand, and seems to flow effortless across the paper.  Or maybe an art pencil, with a lead color so vibrant that it makes words or drawings on paper spring to life.

If the traveler in your life also has a love affair with some of life’s old-fashioned things, here are some ideas to consider:

Journal:  Whether used as a travel diary, a place to organize mementos, some place to record thoughts, or as a sketch book, a high-quality journal can easily be packed away and taken along.

Writing paper:  There are times when email simply won’t do, and that’s when beautiful writing paper or note cards are perfect.  Sending out thank you notes, a letter home to the kids, or maybe even a love letter, quality paper products make a beautiful gift.

Fountain pen:  A quality fountain is a prized possession, and for those who love them, an addition to their collection will be greatly appreciated.  Quality definitely counts here, as the cheap ones can leak with the changes in cabin pressure.  There are lots of different sizes, shapes, nib width, colors, etc., to choose one that you may find it hard to make a choice.  There’s nothing like “inking a deal” with a fountain pen.

Ink:  Like a fountain pen, a quality ink pen or rollerball makes writing effortless, and the choices are myriad.  And if your traveler has an assortment of fountain pens, they’ll likely appreciate an assortment of ink — there are some beautiful colors out there.

Art pencils:  In the hands of an artist, even the lowly number #2 pencil can create works of art, but the magnificent colors and details that can be produced with an art pencil is amazing.

I have packed all of these items with me at one time or another, and I’d recommend them for any traveler on your list.
