I Got Drama at the TriBeCa Film Festival

The website says it best: OMIGOD! It’s next week!

Yes, the annual TriBeCa Film Festival starts next week, Wednesday, April 25th, and runs through Sunday, May 6th.

Although it may seem like it has been around forever, the TriBeCa Film Festival was founded in response to the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks. Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal developed the festival as a means of revitalizing the neighborhood and to celebrate New York City as a major film making hub. The first festival, in 2002, was launched with only four months of planning, but it was a critical, financial, and public success. The festival has expanded over the years, both in its offerings and in attendance.

Navigating the choices of the Festival depends, in large part, on your interests and availability. Here are a couple of suggestions to help you see what really interests you:

Check out the listing of films and show times, note the theater location, and make a list of your top choices, along with their 5-letter code. Have a second, third, and even fourth choice. Back up plans are always good!

Buy tickets online. If your first choice isn’t available, work down your priority list. Tickets fir individual movies range from $12-25, and many are still available for purchase.

If you are unable to buy an individual ticket for a showing, consider buying a pass or package that will give you admission.

If something you want to see is SOLD OUT, don’t give up. On the day of showing, all ticket and pass holders must arrive at the theater 30 minutes prior to show start. About 15 minutes prior to show time, people standing on line will be admitted until the theater is full.

A number of Festival events are FREE:

• The Drive-In Outdoor Screenings - From April 26-28th, at the World Financial Center Plaza, classic family movies will be shown at dusk (approximately 8 pm). The doors open at 6:30 pm, with the programming beginning at 7:30 pm, and the movie starting at 8:30 pm. There is no reserved seating, so get there early for a great seat.
• The Family Street Fair - Saturday, May 5th, from 10 am - 6 pm, along Greenwich Street, between Hubert & Duane. Lots of entertainment and activities for families, and children of all ages. Local area restaurants, businesses, and organizations combine efforts to provide food and fun, and free family films run continuously at the Tribeca Film Center (375 Greenwich Street).
• The ESPN Sports Saturday - This inaugural event is Saturday, May 5th from 10 am - 6 pm, on North Moore, between Greenwich & West. A variety of sporting events and activities will be represented, including BMX bikers, NBA, hockey, NY Giants, NY Jets, NY Mets, tennis, and more! Activities are suitable for all ages.

And remember, even if you can’t make it to NYC for the Festival, you can always buy a hat or t-shirt online, and let people wonder if you were really there.
