In Africa We Go on Safari

Monkey Day 3 in Geography Awareness week, and this time I’d like to head off to Kruger National Park in South Africa, another destination that’s a good two days of travel from my home in Seattle.

Kruger is located in the northeast part of South Africa, along the border of Mozambique to the east, and Zimbabwe to the north.  The southern border is South Africa’s Crocodile River.

One of the main attractions in South Africa, the Kruger is the flagship park in the South African National Park system, and is the largest game reserve in the country.  Over 147 species of animals are found at Kruger, more than at any other African game reserve, and it’s that game that is the big lure for me.

There are a variety of ways to experience the Kruger, from fairly primitive rest camps, to private safari lodges that can be very luxurious.

I’d choose something at the upper-middle range of luxury.  Some place where I’d have a comfortable place to sleep, indoor plumbing with hot and cold running water, delicious food.  In other words, a lodge with most of the comforts that I’m used to, but without the necessity of a high level of luxury or exclusivity.

Since it’s all about the animals, I’d want a lodge that offered a variety of opportunities and methods of watching them.  I’m a fan of the cats – lions, leopards, cheetahs, etc. — so I’d want lots of opportunities to photograph them.  Well, lots of opportunities to photograph ALL the animals.

This is actually a do-able dream trip for me, and it’s probably time to start doing some practical research and planning to make it happen.

Anyone else dream of an African safari?
