It’s Not Too Late! Fall Farmers Markets

I was reading a list of Top 10 Favorite Autumn Fruits over at Eating Fabulously, and it got me thinking about how summer was ending. Still, as Ruth’s list reminded me, I don’t have to give up all those fresh fruits and vegetable that I adore.
Whether I’m at home, or on the road, I love to stop off at a Farmers Market, street fair, or local truck farm, and pick up the freshest of the fresh local produce.
Although I first wrote about Farmers Markets back at the beginning of summer, here in Seattle, many of our local Farmers Markets continue on into Fall. And, of course, there’s always the year round Pike Place Market.
Last week, good friend Anita and I, went to the Columbia City Farmers Market, held on Wednesdays, 3-7 pm, until October 25th. We had been talking about going to this market all summer long; they feature organic produce, and have a wonderful reputation for variety and freshness.
We saw a wonderful assortment of peaches and nectarines, sweet and yummy. Also, lots of different kinds of plums, apples, blackberries, and blueberries. Yummmmmm! Yes, there were samples!
The vegetables didn’t get short-changed, either. Beautiful greens (the Swiss Chard was to die for), green beans, and the best selection of peppers that I’ve seen I in a very long time. Take a look at Anita standing in the peppers above.
Are you hungry yet?
When you’re traveling, stopping by a Farmers Market can be a great way to save on food expenses. Get your lunch at the market: For just a few dollars, you can pick up some bread, cheese, maybe some salami, and a juicy piece of fruit. If the weather is nice, head off to a park or beach to eat an inexpensive meal and enjoy your day. Doesn’t that beat sitting in a stuffy, expensive restaurant?
Check out what’s available in your area with the Department of Agriculture’s Farmers Markets listing.
